We’ve been working a lot with non-fiction (factual) books recently and have been spending time examining the “text-features” in them. Your child should be able to tell you about text features. Some examples are:
Children will be bringing home a non-fiction book this week. Their homework will be to spend some time examining the text features and discussing them with parents. After looking at the text features, talk about all the interesting facts you’ve learned, without even reading the main part of the text!

- Photographs and illustrations
- Maps
- Diagrams
- Labels
- Text boxes
- Table of Contents
- Index
- Glossary
- Captions
- Venn diagram (ask them what this is)
