This week grade 2 students are going to become storytellers!
Your child has brought home a Franklin book or a Robert Munsch book. Parents will need to read it to their child a few times before they will be ready to practice retelling it. (Some kids will be able to read it on their own, but parents should listen to them read so that you can discuss the story.) Here are some suggestions to help kids retell the story in their own words.
Have fun with this! We’ve done it at school several times, so kids should have a pretty good idea what to do. We’ll start presentations next Monday, so you have a few days to get organized. Please call or send a note if you have any questions.

- Only include the important parts, and maybe a few funny parts. We don’t need to know everything that happens in the book
- Practice retelling the story to an audience, from the beginning to the end.
- It’s okay to use the book the first few times they practice retelling the story, but when they present at school they should do it without the book.
- Practice retelling the story many times during the next week, so that your child is confident and ready to present to the class.
- They should use names instead of using “he”, “she” or “it” too often.
- Do not attempt to memorize the story. Students should tell it in their own words. It will be slightly different each time.
- Speak loudly and change their voices to make the story more interesting
- Look at their audience
