This week grade 2 students are going to share their knowledge of chameleons! In class we read a non-fiction book about chameleons and students learned a lot of facts. Then each student picked three facts that they thought were interesting and drew pictures of those facts on a graphic organizer.
Today your child is bringing home that organizer so that he/she can practice sharing the facts with an audience. In grade 1, students learned how to do this when they prepared a speech about spiders. This year the format will be the same, except kids are expected to add more details, state their ideas more clearly and use more expression. Here’s the success criteria we built together.
- The introduction should get the audience interested. It might be something like, “We read a book about chameleons and I sure did learn a lot. I’m going to share some of those facts with you.”
- Then the student will say, “First I’d like to tell you about ……….” “Next I’m going to explain………. Last, I’ll tell you about ……..”
- They should add several details and tell us everything they know about the topics they’re explaining.
- They need an interesting ending to wrap things up. Ex: “I hope that after hearing my presentation you know a lot more about chameleons than you did this morning. ”
- Speak in a loud voice. (This is difficult for some kids. Have them practice yelling their presentation at home.)
- Make eye contact with the audience. They should only need to look at their organizer briefly and then look up at the audience.
Please do not write the speech out for your child. This is an oral presentation and is not to be read. The presentation may be slightly different each time, and that’s fine.
Have fun with this. We’ll begin presentations on Monday Jan. 18.
