We had a false alarm at our school last week and the experience was a bit scary for some kids. So we decided to make the best of it by writing a story about what happened. It made for a perfect story writing opportunity because the events had a beginning, problem, solution and ending. We wrote the story together and practiced reading it and students should have brought home their own personal copy to put on their bookshelves. They're welcome to illustrate the book if they like. Here it is, in case you've misplaced your copy and would like to read it one more time!
One snowy day our grade two class was working with Mrs. Desmarais.
We were practicing our vowels when suddenly the fire alarm went off! Ding! Ding! Ding! We walked outside and waited near the snow banks. We were scared and cold and shocked that we would have a fire drill in the winter. We didn’t have our coats and we were just wearing t-shirts, except for Lily, who was wearing her snowsuit because she was waiting for her grandma to pick her up.
Finally we went into the gym and Miss Comisso said it was only a false alarm. We were relieved that everything was fine.
Then we went back into our classroom and Mme. St. Martin let us put on our coats if we were cold. We did some deep breathing with the singing bowl because we were still a little scared. Then we felt better.
