In English class, we've been reading the story, "Fish Head Soup" and kids were given their own personal copy to read and keep at home. We read it several times together, so kids should be able to read most of it, but some kids will need help. Have your child read it to you and.........
- make sure they point to the words as they're reading.
- have them stop at periods. (We do a stop sign gesture at school.)
- have them say the bold words a little louder.
- have them use different voices when someone is speaking.
- get them to draw illustrations that match the story.
- have fun!
Here's the story, in case yours is missing, or somewhere else.
Mrs. Spatt was making fish head soup. She was singing… “Fish head soup, fish head soup, I love, love, love fish head soup! Boil up the bones, boil up the eyes. There’s nothing like a scoop of fish head soup.”
Spider was making a web…. A huge, enormous, gigantic web. Spider knew that when Mrs. Spatt made fish head soup, zillions of flies came a buzz, buzz, buzzing!
Mrs. Spatt stirred her soup, and she sang… “Fish head soup, fish head soup, I love, love, love fish head soup. Boil up the bones, boil up the eyes. There’s nothing like a scoop of fish head soup.”
Spider sat in her web, and she waited. Then into the kitchen, the flies came a buzzing. They went zoom into the web. They went zoom, zoom, zoom around the soup.
Then those flies went buzzing out the door, dragging the web and Spider behind them!
Mrs. Spatt ran after the flies, waving her wooden spoon. She shouted, “Stop those flies! Slap! Trap! Catch those flies!”
Some people in a park saw Mrs. Spatt running, and they said…. “Mrs. Spatt is as crazy as a goose on the loose!” But they ran after the flies too, and they shouted,
“Stop those flies! Slap! Trap! Catch those flies!”
Some people in a café saw all the people running and they said, “Those people are as crazy as a goose on the loose!”
But they ran after the flies too, and they shouted, “Stop those flies! Slap! Trap! Catch those flies!”
The flies zoomed up and down and Spider hung on by a thread.
The flies zoomed high and low. Then Mrs. Spatt shouted, “Let go!” So Spider did.
And Spider went…….twisting, twirling, wheeling, whirling plunk, plink, ringetty dink…..into Mrs. Spatt’s spoon.
Mrs. Spatt took Spider home and Spider crawled into the teapot.
Mrs. Spatt stirred her soup and she sang, “Fish head soup, fish head soup, I love, love, love fish head soup! Boil up the bones, boil up the eyes. There’s nothing like a scoop of fish head soup.”
