Reading in English is not formally taught or evaluated in grade 1. However, we do teach some of the basics in order to help kids prepare for grade 3, when English reading and writing become part of the curriculum.
We've been working with some "Need to Know". These are the words that are used most commonly when speaking and writing. If kids can recognize these words at a glance, they'll be on their way to becoming readers.
Take the words below and have fun with them. (Don't call it homework.)

Take the words below and have fun with them. (Don't call it homework.)
- Print them on cardboard and make them into flashcards.
- Have your child practice reading them. (Get them to focus on the first letter.)
- Shuffle them and read them again
- Have an adult read them, but make a mistake and challenge your child to catch it.
- Spell them (out loud, on a white board, with cut out letters you can get at the dollar store, with fridge magnets, with markers, with chalk)
- Write a simple sentence with them. (Ex: I like my cat.)
- Write rhyming words even if some of them are silly. (like, bike, pike, nike, rike, jike)
- Find them in books, newspaper, cereal boxes etc.
